Gareth Cronin

VP Engineering, Wynyard Group

Gareth is Vice President of Engineering at Wynyard Group, a global market leader in critical threat assessment and advanced crime analytics software for government, financial services and critical national infrastructure.

Gareth is responsible for building, leading, and retaining teams of highly skilled and educated, technical people in a very competitive labour market.

Prior to joining Wynyard, Gareth worked at New Zealand’s largest software exporter, Orion Health, where he spent four years growing the engineering group from 150 to 350 people, creating new development shops in Christchurch, Bangkok, Canberra, and Phoenix, and producing products that support the imminent transformation of healthcare for the better.

Gareth left an earlier career as a piano teacher and musician to undertake a BSc(Hons) in Computer Science, work as a Software Engineer, and then later complete an MBA at the University of Auckland. Prior to joining Orion Health in 2010, he was leading the development teams at Kiwiplan, a successful New Zealand software house supplying 600 customer sites in the packaging manufacturing industry.

Courageous Conversations and Employee-driven Progression with SFIA

Software teams are generally dominated by young, highly educated, and highly skilled people. These young analysts and engineers desire a sense of progression, constant learning, and recognition as they advance in skills and experience.

Their leaders are often also young and inexperienced, and struggle to provide a clear framework for courageous conversations about performance and career development.

In this presentation, Wynyard Group's Gareth Cronin presents a framework based on the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) for giving young leaders and their charges the tools they need to objectively assess performance and support career progression.

He also presents a process that Wynyard Group use in managing the progression of its staff, and the benefits and challenges that it has found in using the process, and compares this with traditional methods of managing performance and progression.
