Founder, Lane Ventures
Dave Lane is founder and director of Lane Ventures, an IT consultancy specialising in strategy, business model development, community building, and open source software.
He is a former CRI research scientist, recently sold a commercial open source software development business he ran for 14 years, and now spends most of his time democratising tertiary education globally with the Open Education Resource Foundation.
He is currently president of the NZ Open Source Society and is on the advisory group for Creative Commons Aotearoa NZ.
In this presentation, Open Source advocate Dave Lane explains the status quo for data and file formats in NZ, particularly our government, and why - despite the "recommendation" of using open standards - we're always stuck with proprietary standards.
Dave will argue that this situation has a negative impact for almost all of us, and what other forward thinking parts of the world have done to address this.
Introduction the the Open Source Day including a brief background on the NZOSS and FOSS in NZ as well as teasers for the talks.
