Hamish has been working in the industry for 25 years - he is passionate about technology - a geek and proud of it - and he works hard to understand business and business people, and to help them to understand how to solve complex business problems.
Despite IT often being seen as a silver bullet to those problems, Hamish finds that is rarely the case.
He believes it is time for fresh perspectives on the problems of IT, and a pragmatic approach to help technologists to deliver value to their colleagues.
Many organisations have been struggling to deliver real IT value since they began, and IT has been the whipping boy for too long - but IT isn't really to blame.
Hamish Duff takes an alternative point of view that adding bureaucracy in the form of frameworks and controls around IT is not that best way to improve the delivery of customer value. Business people get this wrong all the time, and our terminology, our frameworks, and our actions all just serve to reinforce the wrong behaviors and create adversarial relationships.
Our customers hate our bureaucracy almost more than we do.
The key is that it's not all about the bells and whistles, it is about how we use the capabilities provided by technology to support business processes and goals, and how do we change as a business to be able to get better value out of IT.
This presentation tells the story of how we came to be in this position, and how we can help our business colleagues to get the benefits from technology that we all know are possible.
