A competence is defined as the ability to successfully meet complex demands in a particular context through the mobilisation of knowledge, cognitive skills but also practical skills, as well as social and behaviour components such as attitudes, emotions, and values and motivations. Core competencies contribute to both programme development and the marketing of graduates. This paper proposes a set of core competencies for Computing and Information Technology Research and Education New Zealand (CITRENZ). A survey generated an initial set of characteristics, from which rich descriptions were developed using a story telling approach. From these we discuss the potential role of core competencies for CITRENZ, both in terms of programmes of study, and in determining the benefits (and feasibility) of describing a “CITRENZ graduate”.
