James works at InternetNZ to inform policy which enables the benefits and manages the risks of technological change.

At InternetNZ, James leads or has led work on:

- Copyright reform to enable the creative potential of the Internet
- The Trans-Pacific Partnership, and its implications for New Zealand's tech sector
- Mapping digital inequalities, to support better understanding of and action on digital access for all
- Tax changes extending GST to online software and services

In all these areas, he aims to inform and provoke conversation, learning from the insights and concerns of a wide range of people.
